The challenge
When I joined the Gates Ventures team, one of the early challenges was how to bring GatesNotes content to life on social platforms. The blog had a strong reputation for thoughtful long-form writing, but there wasn’t yet a strategy for short-form storytelling that could meet audiences where they were, on channels like Instagram and emerging video platforms. The broader challenge was finding ways to make complex topics like global health, clean energy, and scientific research accessible and engaging without overwhelming audiences. At the same time, the team needed scalable creative systems to keep pace with an expanding content pipeline.
My approach
I started by creating a framework for Instagram Stories and short-form video content that distilled longer narratives into quick, approachable visual stories. This initiative quickly gained traction and led to millions of additional views and account growth. From there, my role expanded into curating visuals for GatesNotes itself, ensuring design consistency and clarity across the site. I also helped introduced new AI-driven creative tools to the team, mentoring colleagues on how to best integrate them into workflows. This combination of storytelling strategy, brand stewardship, and technical innovation allowed the team to reach wider audiences while working more efficiently and creatively.
